Areas of Interest:
I think the "story" element of Appreciative Inquiry is particularly suited to capture the richness and meaningfulness of aging, and of those settings that are truly doing the challenging but rewarding work of "culture change." It involves taking a very medicalized and hierarchical setting and transforming it into a community where the elders and those who are closest to them -- the direct care workers -- have much more decision making authority in how their day-to-day, moment-to-moment lived experience is structured.

The power of asking the positive question via Appreciative Inquiry can be a real source of energy in settings devoted to culture change.

I've developed a collaborative media site over at www.pioneerexchange.org -- it will be launched on Monday, June 6, 2005.

Education/Professional Experience:
I have a doctorate in Gerontology and Public Policy from the University of Southern California. For five years I was a research professor at the Center for Gerontology and Health Care Research at Brown University. I've since spent the last two years in the Department of Health Policy & Administration at Penn State.

I've studied long-term care organizations from multiple levels, and have recently taken leave of my position at Penn State to begin work as the Director of Networking & Development for the Pioneer Network, the umbrella organization for all the "culture change" work in long-term care.

The Pioneer Network is working closely with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to promote person-centered care in long-term care settings.
