| Decade of Determination:
Building an Economic Engine Empowering a Green City on a Blue Lake Through "AI"
By David Cooperrider
This commentary is a longer version of the Op-Ed David Cooperrider recently published in Cleveland's Plain Dealer newspaper. The commentary shows how AI's passion for the question of "change at the scale of the whole" -- is being played out in a whole city seeking to harness "going green". This remarkable application of Appreciative Inquiry came to fruition in an AI summit initiated by Mayor Frank Jackson with 700 business and society leaders around the theme: "Sustainable Cleveland 2019: Building an Economic Engine to Empower a Green City on a Blue Lake."
The summit attracted interest worldwide: delegates from Sweden; the head of IBM for North America; MIT and Peter Senge; and the Obama administration. In a world where our nation's "town hall" meetings are often poisonous and fractionating, Cleveland's remarkable example shows the world that there is another way.
Beyond David's commentary people are encouraged to also read the incredible news coverage for themselves (more than a dozen newspaper articles).
It was one of the most powerful examples of the AI Summit method ever recorded--showing how the AI Summit can blend advanced economic strategy analysis with action oriented multi-stakeholder designing. It shows how the AI Summit goes beyond participative management models and sheer dialogue, to whole system strategy work and collaborative design, setting the fires of innovation ablaze. It shows how one single management innovation can change everything -- in a way that is not top down or bottom up, but whole.
Stay tuned for announcements on when and where David Cooperrider and Peter Senge will jointly be doing talks and webcasts on this remarkable work coming out of the Fowler Center for Sustainable Value at the Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University. For cities interested in being part of a larger learning effort and a possible collaboration with Case Western Reserve University and MIT -- with perhaps 12 other cities bringing together sustainability and economic re-vitalization using the whole systems approaches of AI and "the learning organization" systems thinking, please email David.Cooperrider@case.edu.
