A Blueprint for Change: Appreciative Inquiry
Author: Terri D Egan , Ann E Feyerherm

Graziadio Business Report, Pepperdine University
Date: 01/01/2005

Volume: 8
Issue: 3

Annotation: What if you suddenly had to move, but couldn't find out exactly where or why? How would you react? Hesitant or eager? Hostile or excited? Would you react differently if you were invited to be involved in the planning and design of your dream house?

Thus Drs. Egan and Feyerherm introduce the analogy of building a house and relocating to present out the concepts of AI - creating blueprints, building a foundation, remodeling - as an agent of change.

"The metaphor of moving is one that we believe captures the emotional intensity and uncertainty that many of us experience when faced with organizational change." This article is part of a series, Leading Strategic Change, in the business journal of Pepperdine's Graziadio School of Business and Management.

The authors nicely lay out the principles of AI and steps of the AI process, using the home-building analogy as the readers guide. Additionally, Egan and Feyerherm take time to point out the differences between AI and traditional problem-solving models.

While much abbreviated, the authors encourage readers to seek additional learning from linked references. This article would be a good introduction to AI.
