Annotation: This paper shows how the recent debates about the relationship between economic growth and environmental protection mirror debates over negotiation theory some fifteen years ago. In both cases, the debate moved from win-lose, to win-win to mixed motive frameworks. Through this examiniation, skills are offered for overcoming barriers to what traditionally may have seemed like intracable conflicts between competing interests.
