Developing a 5 year Corporate Strategy across an organisation

Annotation: Organisation:
Large INGO in Bangladesh that worked closely with partners running certain of its development areas and had a commercial part of the organisation as well.

Who:
The Country Director approached us to lead the development of the 5-Year Country Strategy because he wanted a more participative process than had been used in the past.

What Happened:
We designed a series of workshops that included people from across the organisation and their partner Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO). The initial workshops had 65 participants, roughly 10% of their staff who attended, and designed the strategy. We built upon the best of what they had achieved. Then we worked further over the following months and produced the shortest, most readable (according to the trustees) document of all the countries that produced a strategy.

Outcomes:
This 5-year plan was the only one that the board passed on the first reading. There was tremendous buy-in from the staff. Some of the participants had the following comments:
- Participation is the pre-condition of real learning;
- I learned how to reach a constructive dream/vision through a creative group work and portray how & what I feel about us [the INGO];
- I learned that if we take initiatives & are ready to make decisions as well as take responsibility for them while "Enjoying" ourselves we can make a difference & bring about change for the better.
