Sleeping with the Enemy: Using Rational/Objective Methods to Enhance Appreciative/Constructivist Process
Author: Sara L Orem

OD Network Annual Conference Presentation

10/22/2002

Annotation: This paper was a finalist (one of three) in the OD Network's first student competition and was presented at the OD Network Annual Conference.

This paper connects the deep (and often lengthy) process of transformational
learning (as described by Chris Argyris, Jack Mezirow, Robert Kegan and
others), with the energizing and engaging process of appreciative inquiry
(as described by David Cooperrider and Frank Barrett). The author believes
that the positive energy generated in the initial stages of appreciative
inquiry can sustain the entire appreciative process with the addition of
tools designed to lead to transformational learning for the individual, the
team and the system. She uses a current and ongoing case study in her own
consulting practice as illustration.
